What’s in your bag?

What’s in your bag?

May 2019

“He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.”

1 Samuel 17:40

We live in stressful and hard times and everything that can be shaken in our world has been shaken; the unstable state of the economy, the threat of terror and wars and increase in natural disasters, governments wrestle with their decisions on how to take their nations forward – but one thing that stands stable and certain in our rapidly changing world is the unchanging word of God.

The confidence of the believer to arm themselves with the word of God and the ability to confidently apply the word in the various circumstances of life has never been more important.

This is the confidence with which David approached the giant Goliath. All he had in his bag that day was ‘5 smooth stones’. They were stones he had used before, a technique he had mastered. Additionally, he had been rehearsing the words of the king – the reward for the person who would be able to take out Goliath. The ‘words of the king’ are the word of God. This was the only ammunition in his bag.

The ammunition David approached Goliath with were tried and tested in his life; he had taken out bears and lions with these same stones. David had experience and confidence in the word of God. He was not intimidated or afraid of Goliath, he knew that the same God who had given him victory in dealing with the bear and the lion was able to do it again.

Goliath is symbolic of the enemies and the trials that stand in your way and come against your faith. The bag is representative of your heart and the contents of your bag is the word of God that you have deposited in your heart.

There is a word of God that applies just to you – whatever you are facing and wherever you are. It is called a ‘Rhema’ word. It is specific to you but without spending time in the word or with God, it cannot be applied to your life. David was victorious that day against Goliath because of the stones he had taken time to put in his bag.

Are you making time to read the word and also meditating on aspects of the word that relates to the areas of challenge in your life?

What is in your bag?

The bible says “Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, And the strength of salvation; The fear of the LORD is His treasure.” ( Isaiah 33:6) Meditation on the word will bring confidence and ground you, no matter what life throws at you, YOU have what you need in your bag!

Remain blessed as you continue to seek God and His word.

Remember Jesus loves you and there is nothing you can do about it!
